KTSM News – Texas group celebrates National Disability Voting Rights Week

Posted on September 10, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – REV UP Texas, which is an organization working to empower people with disabilities to get more involved in electoral politics, brought together over 300 voters statewide on Tuesday, Sept. 10 to demonstrate the power of the disability vote in celebration of National Disability Voting Rights Week.

The event, Power the Disability Vote, was held from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Holiday Inn Express’ Conference Room, 409 E. Missouri Ave. in Downtown El Paso.

“A Rutgers study shows that 15.8 million citizens with disabilities reported voting in the November 2022 election. Still, if people with disabilities voted at the same rate as people without disabilities who have the same demographic characteristics, there would be about 2 million more voters,” read a news release sent by El Paso Desert ADAPT.

“If the disability vote can mobilize for our shared interests, we will be a major influence on both the presidential as well as all state and local elections,” said Josue Rodriguez, longtime disability rights activist.

Satellite events in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Killeen, Dallas, McAllen, Beaumont, Lubbock and Corpus Christi were all connected to the El Paso event via Zoom, according to the news release.

People who could not attend the event in person could join that Zoom call as well.

In addition, the recorded event will later be posted to the Power the Disability Vote’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
