KTSM News – El Paso Holocaust Museum to add cutting-edge interactive exhibit

Posted on September 23, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Holocaust Museum is adding a permanent interactive display featuring survivor testimony that is considered cutting edge technology.

The new exhibit, “Dimensions in Testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation,” has garnered international acclaim and will be on permanent display in El Paso,” the El Paso Holocaust Museum said.

The El Paso installation will also feature the only Spanish-speaking Holocaust survivor testimonial in the U.S., “offering a unique and powerful perspective on one of history’s darkest periods,” the Holocaust museum said.

The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 5. at 715 N. Oregon St.

“Dimensions in Testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation” allows museum visitors to engage in conversational interactions with pre-recorded video interviews of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses to genocide, the Holocaust museum said.

“This groundbreaking exhibit employs advanced filming techniques, specialized display technologies, and next-generation natural language processing to create an immersive experience. The exhibit ensures that the voices of Holocaust survivors will continue to educate and inspire future generations,” the Holocaust museum said.

“We are honored to bring ‘Dimensions in Testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation’ to El Paso,” said Jamie Flores, executive director of the El Paso Holocaust Museum. “This exhibit will allow our community to connect with history in an unprecedented way, ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. The inclusion of a Spanish-speaking survivor’s testimony makes this exhibit especially meaningful for our diverse community.”

The exhibit’s interactive survivor biographies enable visitors to ask questions that prompt real-time responses from pre-recorded video interviews with Holocaust survivors and other witnesses to genocide, according to the Holocaust museum.

Museum-goers, students, and others can have conversational interactions with these eyewitnesses to history to learn from those who were there, the museum added.

“Partnering with the El Paso Holocaust Museum, the only fully bilingual Holocaust museum in the U.S., ensures that these vital testimonies resonate across languages and cultures,” said Catherine E. Clark, the USC Shoah Foundation’s senior director of programs. “The inclusion of a Spanish-speaking survivor’s interactive biography allows us to reach new audiences and engage learners with this innovative technology.”
