KTSM News – El Paso Police chief says crime down slightly in City

Posted on September 24, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Police Chief Peter Pacillas told the City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 24 that crime is down slightly in the City.

Pacillas said crime is down in El Paso 3% compared to the same time last year.

Pacilllas added that crime has dropped because of his department’s initiatives, including the Violent Crime Task Force.

“I think we’re already seeing that the great work that the men and women with El Paso Police Department have been doing over the year, violent crime is down,” he said.

While the department has seen a drop in crime, Pacillas says the one trend they continue to see is auto theft.

“The main one that we’re seeing is auto theft. That’s the one that is really hitting us and you still have those trends with the Kias and the Hyundais because of the switch that’s in there,” Pacillas said.

Pacillas also mentioned the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua (TDA). Pacillas said there are no confirmed members of TDA in the region, but El Paso Police do suspect they move through the area.

“El Paso is called El Paso, for the Pass of the North because it’s a path to the north. So, just like anything else that’s moving through the borders, there’s good and bad that happens in there. Yes, suspected TDA has moved through El Paso,” Pacillas said.
