Border Report – Lawmakers react to vice presidential debate

Posted on October 2, 2024

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — The vice presidential candidates dove into policy in a debate on Tuesday night that is likely to be the last of this election cycle.

With Election Day just five weeks away, the question is whether their performances on the debate stage will move the needle with voters.

In Michigan, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio.) referenced the debate in front of a cheering crowd of supporters.

“I thought it went pretty well,” Vance said.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) also had positive things to say following the debate.

“I think it was a good debate, the public got to see a contrast,” Walz said.

Both Republicans and Democrats were quick to declare their candidate as the winner.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) insists it was Vance who came out on top.

“This was an overwhelming, dominating performance by JD Vance. I think the American people, he spoke directly to them about issues that matter,” Stefanik said.

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas.) argued Gov. Walz was more authentic and truthful.

“We need answers. We don’t need dancing. And we get answers from Governor Walz,” Crockett said.

It remains to be seen whether the debate has any impact on the race. Congressman Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) says it could have some effect.

“The first decision and probably most consequential decision that a nominee makes is who the running mate is going to be,” Waltz said.

He points out that the vice president is second in line for the presidency, which he says is especially relevant after the recent assassination attempts.

“Senator Vance looked presidential and that he was ready for the part,” Waltz said.

Ultimately, he says voters will focus on the top of the ticket.

“At the end of the day this will be between Harris and Trump,” Waltz said.

The candidates also seem to be eyeing the finish line.

“We’ve got a very limited amount of time to make our case to the American people that Donald Trump ought to be reelected president,” Vance said.

“As this comes down to the final days, let’s be very clear where we’re headed. Let’s be very clear about the excitement and I can tell you listening to these folks today. We’re winning, Pennsylvania. We’re going to get this thing done,” Walz said.
