KTSM News – Homeless vets in Las Cruces can get help at ‘stand down’

Posted on October 8, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Homeless veterans in Las Cruces can learn about services available to help them and grab some breakfast and a haircut during a special event later this month.

A Homeless Veterans Stand Down will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at the VFW Post 10124, at 709 S. Valley Dr. in Las Cruces. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m.

This event will offer food, haircuts, clothing, health screenings, counseling about VA and Social Security benefits and referrals to a variety of other services.

“The goal is for homeless veterans to access a broad spectrum of services at one convenient location in order to create a plan for re-entry into mainstream society,” organizers said in a news release.

A “stand down” is military term referring to a brief period of time a soldier leaves a combat area to rest and regain strength. Homeless veteran stand downs apply the same principle and is one initiative created by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and community organizations to help combat homelessness among the veteran population.

The Las Cruces stand down is being organized by the VFW New Mexico Foundation and the Las Cruces Vet Center.

For more information about the event, you can call Len Hampton at (575) 405-9001.

To schedule van service, call (575) 915-4899 or (512) 713-4581.
