KTSM News – Racing highlights Day 2 at Las Cruces Air and Space Expo

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Air and Space Expo continues with its second day of action and fun on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Event organizers say the air show and expo features sport class racing and are billing it as the only racing event of its kind in North America in 2024.

The event continues until 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Las Cruces International Airport, located at 8990 Zia Blvd.

Tickets are $5 at the gate and children under 12 years old enter for free, according to the news release.

According to the news release, Las Cruces is the first location for air racing for Sport Class Racing and will be the only air racing event in North America for 2024.

Guests are allowed to bring chairs, blankets, cameras, wagons and small purses and bags. Guests are also encouraged to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and sealed water bottles for the outdoor event.

The following items are not prohibited in the event:

weapons

coolers

glass bottles

drugs/alcohol

bikes

skateboards

one-wheels

smoking/e-cigarettes

animals (except registered service dogs)

oversized backpacks

duffle bags

Kirby Chambliss, a five-time winner of the U.S. National Aerobatic Championship and former men’s Freestyle World Champion, will be performing at the show with his Edge 540.

Chuck Coleman, Stephen Christopher, Todd Rudberg, Dan Kirkland, Scott Farnsworth and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Jerry “Jive” Kerby will also be performing in the air show with their aircraft.

In addition to the performers, Owen Ashurst, one of two “air bosses” authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration, will be the “air traffic controller” of the races and Lunar Sawyer will be the announcer of the races.

Guests can also enjoy food, exhibitions and various vendors, including an on-the-ramp experience with the DreamBig F-18 cockpit that was flown by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels from 1994 to 1999.
