KTSM News – LPCD warns public of theft of Hyundai, Kia vehicles

Posted on October 24, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) —The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is warning Hyundai and Kia vehicle owners to take extra caution as the number of vehicle thefts continues to be high.

According to LCPD, in 2024, 70 Hyundai and 38 Kia vehicles have been reported stolen in Las Cruces. Out of the 70 Hyundai, 49 vehicles were Elantra, making that model the most frequently stolen Hyundai in the area.

LCPD encourages owners of Hyundai and Kia to install new software that requires the ignition key to be inserted before the engine starts and extends the length of the vehicle’s audible alarm from 30 seconds to one minute.

Customers can ask their local dealership for the software update or contact the respective auto manufacturer:

Hyundai: 1-800-633-5151

Kia: 1-800-333-4542

For vehicle owners that have key-start models, LCPD is offering free steering wheel locks on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Guests can pick up their locks from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays at the LCPD’s building located at 217 E. Picacho Ave.

According to LCPD, one steering wheel lock will be provided per vehicle owner while supplies last.

To get your lock, guests are being asked to bring their vehicle registration that proves ownership, LCPD said.

In addition to the new software and steering wheel lock, LCPD is encouraging owners to consider installing and using an audible anti-theft alarm system that prevents the engine from starting without a key.

LCPD is providing guests with tips such as refraining from leaving keys and firearms in the vehicles, and always locking doors when leaving a car parked.
