KTSM News – Dress the Child in Las Cruces needs volunteers this holiday season

Posted on October 25, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Dress the Child program of Las Cruces needs volunteers to help children shop for new clothes and shoes at two local merchants in November and December.

Volunteers help children who have been selected for the program to pick out their new clothes and shoes at Old Navy and Kohl’s, two long-time Dress the Child supporters, organizers said.

For many of the children, who are selected to participate by Las Cruces Public Schools and the Gadsden Independent School District, it is the first new clothes and shoes they have ever received, organizers said.

Each child receives $100 to spend through Dress the Child, and Old Navy and Kohl’s will add to that amount, usually about $25 for each child, program chair Doug Boberg said.

“This is a very important event for these children – one that some of them will never forget,” Boberg said. “It’s also a heart-warming experience for the volunteers who participate – many of whom have been volunteering with Dress the Child for many years.”

This year’s shopping dates are

•Sunday, Nov. 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Old Navy, 2200 E. Lohman Ave. in Las Cruces. Dress the Child will be shopping for 125 children.

•Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning at 4:30 p.m., again at Old Navy in Las Cruces. Dress the Child will again be shopping for 125 children.

•Sunday, Dec. 8, beginning at 5 p.m. at Kohl’s, 2500 N. Triviz Drive in Las Cruces. Dress the Child will be shopping for 250 children.

A program of the Rio Grande Rotary Foundation, Dress the Child has provided new clothes and shoes to more than 15,000 Mesilla Valley children living in poverty since the program began in the mid-1980s.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, contact Boberg at (575) 644-9469 and drboberg@gmail.com.
