KTSM News – Doña Ana County fire stations change station numbers to improve emergency coordination

Posted on November 5, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Fire departments in Doña Ana County will be changing their station numbers to lessen confusion and improve coordination during emergencies, the County said in a news release on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

According to the County, the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County used similar station numbers that would confuse fire responders when multiple departments were at the same emergency.

The following is the new numbers for fire stations in Doña Ana County:

1-29 stations

7: Moongate

10: Organ

11: Doña Ana

12: Fairacres

13: San Pablo

15: Las Alturas

16: Talavera

17: New Mexico State University

30-39 stations

30: Radium Springs

31: Rincon

33: Garfield

40-49 stations

40: Mesquite

41: La Mesa

42: Anthony

43: Chamberino

44: Chaparral

50-59 stations

54: Santa Teresa

55: County Jetport

56: La Union

The number system assigned the new number ranges based on locations, according to the County.

“This change is part of our mutual aid agreement,” Doña Ana County Fire Chief Shannon Cherry said. “It allows us to know exactly where each unit is coming from, which helps us work together better and respond faster.”

In addition to the new numbers, firefighters will have an easier time locating emergencies.

“For example, hearing a ’40’ series number means the unit is coming from the South Region, allowing teams to act quickly and move in the right direction,” the County said.

The new updated system went into effect on Friday, Nov. 1 and the change in system will not affect residents and has not changed access to emergency services, the County said.
