EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Alejandra “Ale” Chavez and Monica Reyes are in the early lead in El Paso City Council District 1 after early voting totals were released shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Chavez, a business owner and former restaurant owner, has 8,329 votes or 37.60 percent, followed by Reyes with 5,960 votes or 26.91 votes. Reyes is the executive director of student support services with Canutillo ISD.
Tom Handy is third with 4,633 votes or 20.92 percent, and Sam Armijo trails in fourth with 3,229 votes or 14.58 percent.
The four candidates are vying to fill the unexpired term of Brian Kennedy in District 1. Kennedy is having to resign his seat representing parts of the West Side and the Upper Valley to run for mayor.
In District 2, incumbent Josh Acevedo has a big lead over challenger Isabel Ceballos Otten. Acevedo has 7,493 votes or 61.85 percent, while Ceballos Otten has 4,621 votes or 38.15 percent.
Acevedo won a special election in January after former city Rep. Alexsandra Annello resigned to run for the Texas House of Representatives.
Ceballos Otten is a Realtor who has been involved on several boards.
District 2 consists of part of Northeast El Paso and Central El Paso.
In District 3, five candidates are vying to succeed Cassandra Hernandez, who has served two terms and is now running for mayor.
Jose Rodriguez has the early lead with 4,381 votes or 27.29 percent, followed by Deanna Maldonado-Rocha with 3,447 votes or 21.47 percent and Kenneth Bell with 3,378 votes or 2.104 percent.
Other candidates are Fabiola H. Arellano with 3,055 votes or 19.03 percent and Jesse Romero with 1,792 votes or 11.16 percent.
District 3 includes the area around El Paso International Airport down to the border and parts of the Lower Valley.
