EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro looks like it will have a new mayor.
Rudy Cruz Jr. is the apparent winner in the mayor’s race over incumbent Ivy Avalos, who was first elected in 2020.
Cruz has 4,906 votes or 62.52 percent, while Avalos has 2,941 or 37.48 percent, according to elecdtion results released at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Cruz has been the District 3 representativbe on the City Council and the mayor pro tem.
Three City Council seats are also at stake in Socorro.
In Socorro’s at-large City Council district, incumbent Ruben Reyes appears headed for another term. Reyes has 3,639 votes or 50.30 percent. Challengers Rene Rodriguez has 2,013 votes or 27.83 percent and Ralph Duran has 1,582 or 21.87 percent.
In District 3, Gina Cordero is headed to victory with 1,092 votes or 62.79 percent, followed by Ricardo H. Ortiz with 647 votes or 37.21 percent.
In District 4, incumbent Yvonne Colon-Villalobos is headed to defeat. Irene Rojas leads with 609 votes or 33.63 percent, followed by Enrique Cisneros with 560 votes or 30.92 percent.
Rojas and Cisneros appear headed for a runoff.
Colon-Villalobos is third with 450 votes or 24.85 percent. Alejandra Blinx Saldana trails in fourth at 192 votes or 10.60 percent.
