El Paso Matters – El Paso Matters Book Club to read Yasmín Ramírez’s memoir, ‘¡Ándale, Prieta!’

Posted on September 27, 2023

In her first book, El Paso author Yasmín Ramírez shares the memory of her tough but loving grandmother with the rest of the world in a way that makes readers feel like part of the family, according to book reviews.

Ramírez’s novel, “¡Ándale, Prieta! A Love Letter to My Family,” eloquently captures the bond between a grandmother and granddaughter, while also capturing the grief that the author suffered when her abuelita died.

“Adult and young adult readers alike can identify with her journey to find her identity and the struggle of growing up between two cultures as a Mexican American, with a story that brings comfort through the loving words of a grandmother and characters that feel like your own family,” according to the publisher’s note.

The book by Ramírez, an El Paso Community College professor, is the next selection of the El Paso Matters Book Club. Click here to join El Paso Matters’ bimonthly book club, a community of more than 800 readers who love El Paso.

“Ándale, Prieta! ” was published in 2021 by Cinco Puntos Press.

Yasmín Ramírez is an assistant professor of English, creative writing and Chicanx literature at El Paso Community College. She is a 2021 Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing Author Fellow as well as a 2020 recipient of the Woody and Gayle Hunt-Aspen Institute Fellowship Award. She stays active in the Borderplex arts community and serves on the advisory board of BorderSenses, a literary nonprofit.
