EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In its 92nd homecoming game UTEP tops Kennesaw St. in double overtime, 43-35. Miners move to 2-8 on the season.
Skyler Locklear returned as its starter for the first time since late October after entering concussion protocol following a hit sustained in the Miners game against LA Tech. Locklear went 28-for-33 collecting 327 yards and four touchdowns. His top target of the night was receiver Kenny Odom with three of those four touchdowns – one of which was the game winner. Trey Goodman led the receiving core with a team high of 150 yards, also a season high for the senior.
El Pasoan and Franklin alum Shay Smith stepped into the game at quarterback early in the 4th recording his first NCAA touchdown of his career on a 3-yard rush. Miners one other rushing touchdown came from running back Jevon Jackson.
Its defense was able to break through the offensive line and collect three sacks for a loss of 14 yards against the Owls. They held Kennesaw St. to 117 yards on the ground and 183 passing.
One area of the night where there was yet more inconsistence from was in kicker Buzz Flabiano. UTEP had the chance to win the game out right in the 4th quarter missing a 41-yard field goal attempt, therefore forcing overtime.
UTEP will look to use this momentum in its final two games of the season on the road, first taking on No. 7 Tennessee, Saturday Nov. 23rd at 11:15 p.m.
