KTSM News – CRRUA: 3 arsenic treatment facilities achieve NMED compliance

Posted on November 14, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Three of four arsenic treatment facilities (ATFs) operated by the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) are now New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) compliant based on the department’s Running Annual Average (RAA), the utility announced Thursday, Nov. 14 in a news release.

CRRUA says it has passed November arsenic tests

CRRUA provides water and wastewater services to residents of Sunland Park and Santa Teresa.

The RAA is determined by averaging the previous four quarterly samples, the utility said.

At the end of each quarter, compliance is based on the RAA of quarterly samples. If the RAA is at or below the Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb,) the system complies.

CRRUA said results of NMED’s fourth quarter arsenic tests from water samples taken on Oct. 22, confirm that the Santa Teresa Community (RAA 6.75 ppb), Border Entry (RAA 6.0), and Sunland Park (RAA 9.25) ATFs are compliant based on the RAA.

The Santa Teresa Industrial ATF also passed NMED’s fourth-quarter arsenic tests and is close to achieving compliance. Since it is not yet compliant, NMED will issue a Notice of Violation (NOV), which pertains strictly to compliance and not water quality, the utility said.

CRRUA water continues to be below the MCL of 10 ppb and is safe to consume, the utility said.

The utility said this is the third straight NMED quarterly arsenic test all four CRRUA ATFs have passed.
