KTSM News – NM State Parks offering free day use on Black Friday

Posted on November 23, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — If you are looking for a day trip or to get outdoors over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, New Mexico State Parks is offering free day-use access to all 35 state parks on Friday, Nov. 29.

It is a great way to explore New Mexico’s “diverse landscape — from scenic lakes and mountains to deserts and canyons — without the usual day-use fees,” New Mexico State Parks said in a news release.

“We’re excited to invite New Mexicans and visitors alike to skip the crowds and experience the tranquility and beauty of our state parks on Black Friday,” State Parks Director Toby Velasquez said. “This day is about promoting wellness, connecting with nature, and discovering the incredible outdoor experiences our parks have to offer. We hope people will take the opportunity to opt outside and enjoy some fresh air with family and friends.”

The free-day use access applies to all state parks, including Elephant Butte Lake, Mesilla Valley Bosque, Leasburg Dam, Oliver Lee, Rockhound, City of the Rocks and Pancho Villa.

In addition to offering free access, New Mexico State Parks encourages visitors to plan for a safe and enjoyable experience by:

• Dressing in layers for variable weather conditions.

• Staying hydrated and bringing plenty of water, especially if hiking or engaging in outdoor activities.

• Checking specific park hours and availability online at emnrd.nm.gov/spd before heading out.

• Practicing Leave No Trace principles to protect the parks for future generations.

The free day-use access is available from park opening to closing hours on Friday, Nov. 29. Some seasonal closures may be in effect.
