KTSM News – ‘It’s Showtime’ to benefit theater students at NMSU

Posted on December 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — If you are looking for something fun to do next weekend while helping a good cause, the “It’s Showtime!” fundraiser will be held at New Mexico State University.

The event will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, 1000 E. University Ave. “It’s Showtime” will benefit students in the NMSU Theatre Department.

The event, sponsored by the American Southwest Theatre Company (ASTC), is a performing arts trivia show that includes audience participation, along with performances by a variety of local music, theater and dance organizations, according to a news release sent out about the event.

Performers will include NMSU Theatre Department students, dancers from Borderlands Ballet Company, Organ Mountain High School Choir, Gospel Choir of Las Cruces, Studio A-440 in Las Cruces, dance students from Alma d’arte Charter High School and local artist Georgina Armendariz doing a hoop act.

“The show aims to highlight the wide range of talent we have here in the Las Cruces community,” Event Director Monique Foster said. “Las Cruces is fortunate to have a vibrant performing arts community. ‘It’s Showtime!’ is the perfect opportunity for people to get a taste of what Las Cruces has to offer while supporting the excellent work being done by the NMSU Theatre program.”

Tickets to “It’s Showtime!” are $20 (plus fee) in advance. You can buy advance tickets by clicking here. Tickets at the door are $22.50. Sponsorships are available for $125 and include two tickets to the event. You can be a general sponsor or sponsor a performer, a song, the emcee or the producer/director by calling Denise Welsh at (575) 642-2980.

Audience members can also participate in the evening’s performing arts trivia game by purchasing as many tickets as they want for $5 each prior to the live performances. From the audience members who buy tickets, some will be chosen in a drawing to come on stage and participate in the trivia contest hosted by emcee John Pohl. The winner of the game will receive two season tickets to the NMSU Theatre Department.

All proceeds from the event, including trivia contest tickets, will benefit NMSU theater students by paying for student travel to auditions and competitions, scholarships and guest artists who work with theater students at NMSU.

“It’s Showtime!” is part of the 40th anniversary of ASTC, a nonprofit created by Mark Medoff and Bruce Streett in 1984 to benefit the NMSU Theatre Department.
