EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – UTEP men’s basketball will look for redemption against non-conference opponent Seattle U at the Don Haskins Center Saturday afternoon, a team that topped the Miners just a year ago on their home court.
The Miners fell short to the Red Hawks 73-61 in late December of last year, becoming just one of five teams that handed UTEP a loss at home.
“To be honest with you they kicked our butt; they controlled the game from the start,” UTEP head coach Joe Golding said. “Not many people have come in here and done that to us at the Don but they did. They’ve got really good players, they’re extremely well coached and they’ve been tested early this season. They beat a really good UC San Diego team and then played Duke really well. Not many times do you get a second chance at a non-conference opponent, but we’ve got that opportunity. I think our guys will be ready to respond.”
Returning a good amount of last year’s squad, players remember their game against Seattle U well. They are entering the game this time around with a chip on their shoulder.
“I’m just excited to get back out there and have another shot. That’s all I say and let ball do the rest,” forward Otis Frazier III said.
The Miners enter Saturday riding a two-game win streak after closing out the Bull Dawgs Classic, 1-2. UTEP dropped its first game of the three-day stretch responding with two wins to close out the weekend. They’ll look to build upon that playing in its first game at home since Nov. 12.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.
