EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – New Mexico State men’s basketball team upset New Mexico in overtime, 89-83 on Saturday night in Albuquerque. With this win, the Aggies snapped a five-game losing streak.
During the Lobos’ first sold-out game of the season, UNM would get the quick lead over NMSU in the first half – at one point reaching an 11-point difference on the scoreboard.
Aggies would catch fire with eight minutes left on the clock before the break, going on a 25-5 run to head to the locker room at half with the 47-38 lead. Robert Carpenter led the offensive push with a team high of 14 points during the first 20 minutes of play.
Late in the second half, UNM responded, bringing the game within single digits before tying it at 70 with 1:48 to go. Fouls would put Dionte Bostick at the foul for a one-and-one opportunity. Christian Cook followed for two, and put NMSU up once more at 73-70.
NMSU was three seconds away from a victory when a goaltending violation is called forcing overtime.
Aggies opened extra time with a quick 8-2 run and never looked back, securing the win.
This win for NMSU marked head coach Jason Hooten’s first win over UNM since joining the program last year.
The Aggies are now 4-5 on the season.
