El Paso Matters – El Paso events: Book Club meetup, UTEP, EPCC grads, Streetcar Santa, more holiday events

Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

El Paso Matters Book Club Meetup

Explore the haunting narrative of “Swallow the Ghost” with author Eugenie Montague during the next El Paso Matters Book Club Meetup, scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the El Paso Public Library Irving Schwartz Branch, 1865 Dean Martin Drive.

The event includes a moderated discussion of Montague’s latest work, followed by a live Q&A session where attendees can engage directly with the author. Admission is free, but registration is encouraged.

UTEP, EPCC Commencement

Celebrate the achievements of local graduates as the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College host their 2024 fall commencement ceremonies. 

EPCC will kick off the celebrations with three ceremonies at 9 a.m., 1 and 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at the Don Haskins Center. 

UTEP will follow with ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. for the colleges of Health Sciences and Nursing and at 6 p.m. for the College of Science, Woody L. Hunt College of Business and the School of Pharmacy. On Sunday, Dec. 15, UTEP will honor graduates from the College of Liberal Arts at 1 p.m., followed by the colleges of Education and Engineering at 6 p.m.

El Paso Streetcar: Read and Ride With Santa and Mrs. Claus

Hop aboard the El Paso Streetcar for an evening of holiday cheer as part of WinterFest. Join Santa and Mrs. Claus for a special Read & Ride event at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Enjoy storytime while riding through the city’s holiday lights. The event begins at the Streetcar stop across from the El Paso Convention Center parking garage, located at Santa Fe Street and Henry Trost Court. Streetcar rides are always free. You can track its location using the Ride Sun Metro app, available for iOS and Android. Information: sunmetro.net

HOLIDAY EVENTS: WinterFest, Lights on the Lake, Fred Loya Christmas Lights lead 2024 El Paso holiday events

Christmas Walk and IMAX Movie

Join the WeHike Neighborhood Association for a day of outdoor fun and a classic holiday film Saturday, Dec. 14. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at McKelligon Canyon Gate, where participants can enjoy a family-friendly hike or walk at their own pace while dressed in festive attire. 

At 10 a.m., the festivities continue at the Premiere Cinemas at Bassett Place, 6101 Gateway Blvd. West, with refreshments, group photos and holiday mingling before the 11 a.m. screening of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” 

Admission is free, but registration is encouraged to help plan for refreshments. Information: wehikeadventure.org

Chanukkah on the Plaza

Celebrate the Festival of Lights at Chanukkah on the Plaza, a free, family-friendly event taking place from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at San Jacinto Plaza in Downtown El Paso. Enjoy traditional holiday foods, festive music from artists such as Carlos Gamez, Cantor David Frommer, and the Kosher CowPokes, and activities including face painting, arts and crafts for kids and a boutique store. Pick up a dreidel and candles to bring the spirit of Chanukkah home. Hosted by the Jewish Federation of El Paso and Las Cruces, the event is open to all. Information: jfedeplc.org or 915-842-9554.
