Border Report – In brief: Smugglers starved migrants for two weeks

Posted on December 13, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Police in Juarez, Mexico say they rescued 10 migrants from a home where smugglers kept them under lock and key for 10 days.

The Mexican and Central American captives told police officers they had not been fed since last week and were kept under threats to have their relatives pay 30,000 pesos ($1,500) or they would be harmed, the Chihuahua state police said in a statement.

Police and members of Mexico’s National Guard went to the home on Calle Argon near the Rio Grande after one of the migrants got access to a cell phone in the house belonging to a smuggler and called 911.

The migrants were taken by authorities for a medical checkup and were fed. There was no word on any arrests.

Woman cut up in pieces, man killed across street from school

Two recent, high-profile murders remain unsolved in Juarez.

One involves the beheading of a woman in the Zaragoza neighborhood whose head was left inside a cooler along with a note warning against those who sell and consume crystal meth in the area.

The limbs and torso of the unidentified victim were left inside plastic bags and a blanket next to the cooler near the corner of Suarez and Nurio streets late last week.

On Wednesday morning, the body of a man whose throat was slit was found in a home across from the elementary school in the Heroes de la Revolucion neighborhood.

No arrests have been reported in either case nor suspects identified.

Juarez has recorded 43 homicides in 13 days so far in December.
