EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Business owner and former restaurant owner Alejandra “Ale” Chavez is leading the runoff race for El Paso’s City Council District 1, according to early voting results released at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Chavez has 3,464 votes or 63.86 percent, followed by Monica Reyes, executive director of student support services with Canutillo ISD, with 1,960 votes or 36.14 percent.
Chavez and Reyes ran against two more candidates in the general election on Nov. 5 vying to fill the unexpired term of Brian Kennedy in District 1.
Kennedy had to resign his seat representing parts of the West Side and the Upper Valley to run for mayor.
Since no one received more than 50 percent of the votes, that triggered a runoff between Chavez and Reyes.
In District 3, Deanna Maldonado-Rocha is in the early lead in the runoff race after early voting results were released at 7 p.m.
Maldonado-Rocha has 2,193 votes or 62.37 percent, followed by Jose Rodriguez with 1,323 votes or 37.63 percent. Maldonado is a capacity analyst in the health-care industry, while Jose Rodriguez is a real-estate agent.
The candidates are vying to succeed Cassandra Hernandez, who has served two terms and ran for mayor in the general election on Nov. 5.
District 3 includes the area around El Paso International Airport down to the border and parts of the Lower Valley.
