SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — A person described as a “soldier” with the Mexican Army was arrested in Tijuana this week for his alleged involvement in the killing of three women who were found strangled to death inside an SUV Monday afternoon.
The suspect, who according to the Baja California attorney general’s office appears to be a lieutenant in the military, has not been identified.
Baja California’s Attorney General, María Elena Andrade Ramirez, mentioned the suspect is still under investigation along with others who remain at large.
“We are in the early stages of the investigation,” Andrade Ramirez said. “We are still trying to figure out if he was an active member of the military and what his job description was.”
Baja’s attorney general told reporters during a news conference Tuesday that the suspect was found with illegal drugs and a weapon in his possession when taken into custody on Monday.
The gun is reportedly not a military-issued weapon.
The women who were found dead were all 25 to 30 years of age and have yet to be identified. All appear to have been strangled to death, according to the Baja Attorney General’s Office.
The SUV in which their bodies were found is described as a white Tahoe with California plates and tinted windows.
Andrade Ramírez also said investigators found a banner with threats written on it directed toward one of the cartels, but she cautioned that at times, these banners are left behind as a way to sidetrack investigations.
