Posted on December 20, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Six El Paso high school students have received a $2,000 scholarship from the Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (TALAS) El Paso Chapter.

The scholarships aim to empower students in their pursuit of a higher education.

According to the news release sent out by TALAS El Paso on Friday, Dec. 20, the students were selected based on their academic achievements, leadership qualities, resilience in overcoming challenges and their commitment to community impact.

The following students are receiving the “Keep Moving” $2,000 Scholarship:

Melina Balcorta, Young Women’s Leadership Academy

Leslie Chavez, Eastwood High School

Josiah Ortiz, Canutillo High School

Vania Flores Palacios, Bowie High School

Brisa Gutierrez, Eastwood High School

Yuliana Vega, Anthony High School

The students will be able to use their scholarships at any college or university of their choice, TALAS El Paso said.

To honor the recipients of the scholarship, TALAS El Paso will be hosting a “Keep Moving Scholarship” recognition ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17 at the El Paso Community Foundation Building, located at 333 N. Oregon St.

“The TALAS El Paso ‘Keep Moving Scholarship’ is more than just a financial award; it is a celebration of resilience, dedication, and the power of education. These six students have demonstrated incredible strength, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference. Their stories inspire us, and we are proud to support their academic pursuits,” TALAS El Paso Board Scholarship chair and VP of Communication Christopher Judge said.

The “Keep Moving” Scholarship aligns with TALAS’ mission of supporting academic excellence, leadership and equitable educational opportunities for Latino students in Texas, TALAS El Paso said.

“We’re thrilled to award six students who represent Region 19 and four different districts. These students have a beautiful story that has prepared them for this opportunity to continue their education. Our organization is committed to supporting our community and giving students the financial support to ‘Keep Moving’ in their academic journey and beyond,” TALAS El Paso President Mark Paz said.
