EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 23-year-old man was shot and killed while trying to intervene in a fight at a Northeast El Paso apartment complex over the weekend, El Paso Police said.
Jose Rufina Melendez, 23, was identified as the person who was shot and killed late Saturday night, Dec. 21 at 9435 Diana at the North Mountain Village Apartments.
Police said they were called out to the apartment complex at about 11:35 p.m. Saturday on reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot. He was transported to a local hospital where he died, police said.
The Crimes Against Persons Unit is leading the investigation.
During the preliminary investigation, police learned that a fight occurred between two groups of people in the complex’s parking lot. During the altercation, the victim, Melendez, tried to “intervene” and was shot, police said.
The shooter fled the scene before officers’ arrival.
Police said in their original release to the news media that two other people were transported with injuries but did not say if they were shot.
