EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — At least a dozen bodies were found in several unmarked graves last week near Ciudad Juarez’s Ascension area, according to a press release by Chihuahua State Officials.
The press release says agents discovered 11 unmarked graves where 12 skeletons were exhumed. Agents conducted a three-day investigation starting on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The press release says agents discovered three unmarked graves in the area that Wednesday. The operation continued on Thursday, Dec. 19, and five more unmarked graves were discovered. On Friday, Dec. 20, three more unmarked graves were discovered.
Agents also found shell casings of various calibers in the area, according to the press release.
The discovery of human remains prompted a broader excavation effort in the area. Officials say the bodies were sent to the Juarez medical examiner to determine their identity as well as a cause of death.
The area where the bodies were found is located along the border and is known for organized crime and drug trafficking.
An investigation is currently ongoing.
