KTSM News – City of Las Cruces to increase minimum wage on Jan. 1

Posted on December 29, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Las Cruces will increase its minimum hourly wage from $12.36 to $12.65, effective Jan. 1.

According to the City of Las Cruces, the increase will also occur for tipped employees going from $4.95 to $5.06 an hour, in accordance with Las Cruces Municipal Code.

“On January 1, 2020, the State of New Mexico enacted the New Mexico Minimum Wage Act. Each year in September, we calculate the minimum wage and tipped wage based on the City ordinance and compare it to the minimum wage and tipped wage set by the State of New Mexico; we adopt the higher of the two,” according to the City.

In 2014, the City enacted an ordinance to establish a minimum wage, tipped wage and annual increases for Las Cruces.

From 2015 to 2019, the minimum wage was at a set number but for 2020 and beyond, both wage increases were tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as per the ordinance, according to the City.

According to the City, for 2025, the State minimum will remain at $12 but the City of Las Cruces minimum wage will increase based on the CPI index and the City ordinance, which adopts the higher of the State or Las Cruces amount.
