KTSM News – Gov. Abbott partners with TxDOT to remind drivers to ‘Move Over or Slow Down’

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is partnering with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to remind drivers to “Move Over or Slow Down” in a new public service announcement.

DPS, El Paso law enforcement bring awareness of distracted driving

Abbott appears in a new public service announcement reminding drivers of the dangers police, emergency responders and construction workers are in when working on the side of the road.

“Texas roads are one of the deadliest places for law enforcement, first responders and construction workers. Many drivers fail to move over or slow down when they see flashing lights or construction signs, and Texans are dying because of it. Don’t be the reason that a police officer, a paramedic, or a construction worker lose their lives. Move over. Slow down. It is the law!” Abbott said in the PSA.

The “Move Over or Slow Down” law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching a vehicle with emergency lights including law enforcement, fire, EMS, the Texas Department of Transportation, tow trucks and other vehicles.

In addition to applying to law enforcement and other parties, the Move Over or Slow Down law requires drivers to slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit if switching lanes is not possible.

Drivers are asked to reduce to 5 mph on roadways with a posted speed limit of 25 mph or less.

According to TxDOT, drivers who do not follow the law can receive a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense, and drivers who cause serious injuries can face jail time and a fine of up to $4,000.
