EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso’s Streets and Maintenance Department is preparing to implement its snow and ice plan over the next few days as El Paso will be expecting freezing temperatures and a couple of snow days.
The City says it will have crews mitigate the buildup of black ice on bridge overpasses and streets that connect fire and police stations to hospitals and to major arterial streets. The City will also target any problematic condidtions caused by ice and by any snow buildup that happens.
“The plan aims to make the streets as passable as possible under the extreme conditions and to take efforts to combat the buildup of black ice on roadways,” Streets and Maintenance Director Richard Bristol said. “This is done with the use of sand spreaders attached to dump trucks carrying sand for rapid deployment in needed areas and salt spreaders on pickup trucks. If there is a snow event, our priorities will include the removal of any obstructions in the streets caused by the weather event to make them clear and passable utilizing heavy equipment – should it come to this we will prioritize streets based on conditions, with arterial and collector streets serving as the priority because they carry the heaviest traffic volumes.”
The City says preparations for this weather event began on Monday, Jan 6., and crews will be activated by the Streets Department depending on weather conditions, which are monitored closely by all street supervisors and management throughout the day and night.
