The communal practice of flashing headlights to warn other drivers about police in West TexasI was 25 when I learned to drive. Growing up in New York, I’d never had any reason to pick it up. Then I moved to the border town of Presidio—population 3,226—where public transportation was nonexistent, taxis were a faraway notion, and the meaning of “close by” was anyone’s guess. So I bought my first car, a Chevrolet Aveo hatchback that friends would henceforth refer to as the “golf cart.”Far West Texas is the best place to learn to drive, and the worst. The best because it’s all two-lane highways and there are hardly any other cars on the road. The worst because those conditions are seldom found anywhere else—certainly not within the sprawl of cities or 26-lane highways that thread through this great state.…
