KTSM News – El Paso, Socorro get federal grants for transit projects

Posted on January 10, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, announced Friday, Jan. 10 that the federal government has awarded the Borderland nearly $2.5 million in transportation grants.

The City of Socorro will get $1.7 million, while the City of El Paso will get $750,000, Escobar’s office said.

The money is coming from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants.

Socorro will use the money to plan and design street improvements for more than 2 miles of Moon Road. The project will include environmental analysis, community engagement, engineering and design, and benefit-cost analysis.

The City of El Paso will use its grant for a feasibility study for the expansion of Sun Metro’s Bus Rapid Transit service along the Montana Brio Corridor.

The El Paso study will identify transportation challenges and recommendations on potential safety and route improvements, as well as speed and reliability investments, Escobar’s office said.

“I continue to be immensely proud of the funding the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests in our community,” Escobar said. “The over $2 million coming to El Paso will have real world impacts on so many in our community. House Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration made a commitment to repair and invest in America’s infrastructure, and we’ve delivered.”
