KTSM News – Borderland group says EPISD’s redesign failing ‘barrio schools’

Posted on January 21, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Familias Unidas del Chamizal will be protesting outside the El Paso Independent School District (ISD) building on Tuesday, Jan. 21, claiming the district’s redesign is failing barrio schools.

Aside from protesting, the organization will also be holding a press conference at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, to address the school board regarding the “district’s educational neglect of barrio families,” the organization said.

The organization claims the district’s redesign “fails barrio schools and does not address the historic neglect and discriminatory practices that have hurt barrio families for generations.”

The organization also claims that the recently adopted redesign of Guillen Middle School’s ace model for barrio schools and the recent designations of the “Zones of Excellence” have been approved without “adequate parent input for critical resources and programs to address racial inequities in our schools.”

The organization says barrio families have been “locked into a zone of racism with the most outdated, environmentally unsound schools and a curriculum that provides the most minimal education, reverting back to the English Only curriculum, while other students are afforded programs that would allow them to complete associate’s degrees in engineering, medicine, and other 21st century fields.”

KTSM has reached out to El Paso ISD regarding these claims. The district has not responded as of Tuesday afternoon.
