On a Friday night in December, I counted a dozen people competing in a cornhole tournament in a gravel courtyard decorated with string lights outside a hole-in-the-wall called Dinky’s BBQ. While this scene could be a typical Friday night anywhere in Texas, it was eight thousand miles away in Northern Thailand.Every winter, I head to Chiang Mai, one of Austin’s sister cities, to escape cedar season and work remotely for a few weeks.
