EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Public Libraries and credit union GECU are teaming up to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program this year.
VITA offers free tax preparation help from IRS-certified VITA volunteers. The program kicked off Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave.
The program will last through April 14 at the Branigan library. Regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays (except President’s Day on Feb. 17), and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays. Space is limited, and VITA sessions will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, please visit freetaxeselpaso.org.
To receive tax services, residents are asked to bring their ID, Social Security card, proof of direct deposit, a copy of last year’s tax return, and 1095-A (if applicable). For those who are married filing jointly, both parties must be present with their information. College students must know if their guardians are claiming them as a dependent.
If the volunteer tax preparers’ time slots are full for the day, walk-ins may be turned away.
Tax returns for residents of Puerto Rico, foreign students, farm income/loss, foreign earned income, rental income, and military personnel are not included in the VITA program.
