El Paso Matters – Mexican National Guard, Army troops arrive in Juárez, other border cities under tariffs deal

CIUDAD JUAREZ – Mexico began deploying 10,000 National Guard and Army troops to the northern border on Tuesday to help prevent drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, as well as arms trafficking and illegal migration, government officials said.

That comes after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo agreed to a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump to delay the imposition of 25% tariffs on Mexican products.

In Chihuahua, uniformed personnel are being deployed to Ojinaga, Puerto Palomas and Ciudad Juárez, according to a statement issued by the National Defense Secretariat.

The number of personnel to be deployed in each of these border communities was not specified, but the first group of troops began arriving at the Juárez city airport at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Another group is expected to arrive by land tomorrow, officials said.

National Guard troops will arrive at the border with the United States in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. They were stationed at Campeche, Merida, Yucatan and Cancun, Quintana Roo, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Puebla and Veracruz.

These additional personnel, who will be pulled from other areas across Mexico, will reinforce the troops already deployed on the border.

Two days after Trump’s inauguration, Juárez began setting up tents in a camp that will temporarily house migrants deported from the U.S. The tents have been installed in the area known as El Punto at the Parque Chamizal. Mexico initially was only going to accept Mexican deportees, but later expanded its agreement to temporarily accept deported migrants from various nationalities.
