My grandfather’s left shoulder was covered by a Longhorn’s head bursting through a five-pointed star. Above the star were the words “The Lone Star State,” and below it, just in case the message wasn’t clear enough, was “Texas.” A 25-year-old five-foot-ten, 150-pound Marine with already thinning hair, Private James Daniel “Dan” McCammon got inked in San Diego before shipping out for Hawaii and then Iwo Jima, where, as a forward observer, he was sent ahead of the artillery with a coil of wire and a phone to call for fire.
