El Paso Matters – El Paso County to save $40 million and promote sustainability with Schneider Electric

Posted on February 5, 2025

El Paso County has entered a strategic, long-term partnership with Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and automation. The county is undertaking a comprehensive modernization project to upgrade existing infrastructure, enhance efficiency, and drive sustainability efforts across 30 facilities.

The project officially launched in January with a construction kickoff event, marking the beginning of an ambitious long-term strategic plan. This first phase alone is projected to save the county more than $40 million over the next 20 years.

The county has approved major upgrades, including:

  • Upgrades to the mechanical plant at the courthouse
  • Enhancements to the building automation system at the courthouse
  • Water efficiency improvements at the Jail Annex and Downtown Detention Center
  • Countywide installation of energy-efficient LED lighting

“Our project is designed to align with El Paso County’s sustainability goals, ensuring that future development enhances our community’s resilience and quality of life,” said Betsy Keller, chief administrator of El Paso County.

El Paso County leadership prioritized energy and water conservation at the core of its project development efforts. By partnering with Schneider Electric, an investment-grade audit revealed extensive opportunities to significantly reduce resource usage.

The results speak for themselves: a 23% decrease in annual energy use and a conservation of 48 million gallons of water each year. This initiative brings substantial environmental benefits, cutting CO2 emissions by 11,872 tons annually. That’s the equivalent of:

  • Taking 2,698 cars off the road every year
  • Planting 3,670 acres of trees annually
