EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Five Ysleta Independent School District’s (YISD) high schools qualified to compete in the state mariachi championships, the district announced on Thursday, Feb. 6.
The following school mariachi bands will be competing at the 2025 UIL State Mariachi Festival, which will take place Feb. 20-22 at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center in Seguin, Texas:
- Mariachi Reyna from Eastwood High School
- Mariachi Los Conquistadores from Del Valle High School
- Mariachi Los Trovadores from Hanks High School
- Mariachi Estrella from Riverside High School
- Mariachi Cielo Azul from Young Women’s Leadership Academy
All schools earned a superior division 1 rating at the Region 22 UIL Regional Mariachi Contest that qualified them to compete at the state level, YISD said in a news release.
According to YISD, at the state championship, participants are not ranked against each other and will be performing in front of a panel of three judges.
The mariachi groups will then be given a rating between one through five, with one being the highest and five being the lowest.
At the end of the performance, each mariachi group will receive a 30-minute clinic with a nationally recognized mariachi educator/performer to “promote musicianship and the artistry of making music,” YISD said.
