KTSM News – Pet supply drive to remember man killed in crash

Posted on February 15, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An aninal welfare advocate and Northeast El Paso resident who was killed in a crash earlier this year will have his memory honored during a pet supply drive.

City Rep. Cynthia Boyar Trejo said her office is joining with community partners to put on the first Cody L. Vaughn Memorial Pet Supply Drive.

The event will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 at Joey Barraza and Vino Memorial Park, 11270 McCombs St.

Vaughn was killed in a crash on Jan. 12 in Northeast El Paso.

Boyar Trejo’s office said the following in a news release sent out on Saturday, Feb. 15:

“Cody moved through the world with a quiet, unshakeable kindness, constantly on the lookout for creatures in need of help, no matter how small or lost. With soft hands and a heart that seemed to expand with every rescued soul, he approached each animal with patience and understanding. His love for animals was unconditional, transcending barriers of species or background. He offered not just a safe space, but a sense of hope — turning fear into trust, sorrow into joy, and despair into a second chance at life.

“Cody was a rare and precious kind of person, one whose compassion knew no bounds, always willing to give a little more, expecting nothing in return but the quiet satisfaction of knowing he made the world a better place, one rescue at a time.”

El Paso Parks and Recreation will plant a memorial tree and install a dedicated bench in Vaughn’s memory at the Joey Barraza and Vino Memorial Park.

The El Paso Animal Services will also provide free pet microchipping during the event. Donations of pet food, leashes, collars, shampoo, and other essential pet care items will be distributed to rescue care and foster organizations.
