EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – An El Paso man was sentenced to seven years in prison after hiding in Mexico for six weeks after fleeing the scene of a deadly crash that happened last year in West El Paso, the 34th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said.
The El Paso DA’s Office said Hector Julian Velasquez, 23, accepted a plea agreement on Thursday, Feb. 13.
He had pleaded to collision involving death 10 months after the crash occurred early Sunday morning, April 28 in 2024, at the intersection of North Mesa Street and Castellano Drive, the DA’s Office added.
In addition, Velasquez also pleaded guilty to five drug-related charges from 2022 and 2023 and waived all his appellate rights. He will serve all the sentences concurrently in state prison, the DA’s Office said.
According to the indictment, Velasquez was involved in a crash with another vehicle and did not stop to render aid, the DA’s Office said.
The DA’s Office said there were two people in the other vehicle who were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. However, one of them, identified as Eric Leal, 23, died from his injuries.
