EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) is grappling with a multimillion dollar budget deficit. If it’s not addressed, it could lead the district to bankruptcy, its Superintendent Pedro Galaviz said.
In a letter sent to the CISD community, Galaviz said that the district is facing a serious financial challenge.
“Like many other school districts in Texas and the El Paso region, we are navigating a projected multi-million-dollar budget deficit for the current fiscal year. This deficit is the consequence of a state funding system that has failed to keep up with the needs of public education,” the letter said.
Gustavo Reveles, a spokesperson for CISD, said the district still needs to discuss cost-saving solutions to deal with the current deficit.
“So we are seeing our budgets really shrink, and we’re having to deal with that. Unfortunately, that means we’ve had to tighten our belts in a way that is more than needed. We’re having to discuss cost-saving measures that are a little bit painful. And we’re about to have some very difficult conversations,” Reveles said.
Reveles added that officials still need to discuss how exactly how much of a budget deficit the district is in before they can think of solutions.
CISD will have a a board meeting on at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. to discuss the district’s financial situation and possible solutions.
