EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The man convicted of fatally shooting his wife last year in Mesilla, New Mexico, was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, according to the Doña Ana County District Attorney’s Office.
The Doña Ana County D.A.’s Office says Oscar Sandoval, 59, was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison for first-degree murder plus 4 1/2 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm enhancement. Both sentences will run consecutively.
As we have previously reported, Sandoval was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated assault last month after he shot and killed his wife Shiereen Aljibury, 39, a year ago on University Avenue.
On April 1, 2024, a witness was driving eastbound on University Avenue and saw a gray SUV stop in the westbound lane, according to court documents.
The witness saw Aljibury get out of the SUV from the right passenger side and told the witness that she had been shot and motioned with her hand to call 911.
The witness told police that she heard four gunshots and Aljibury fell to the ground on the dirt shoulder near the pavement off University Avenue, according to court documents.
Sandoval also threatened the witness before fleeing the scene. The witness then rendered aid to Aljibury and called 911.
Sandoval’s vehicle was later found in Sunland Park, where investigators found a wallet with Sandoval’s driver’s license and credit cards in his name. The vehicle also had a bullet hole in the right passenger window and the window door frame.
Investigators also recovered shell casings that were found near Aljibury’s body.
Sandoval was later apprehended on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in Juarez, Mexico, and was subsequently extradited to the U.S. the following day.
