We thought we wanted out. As teenagers in a west Houston neighborhood, my friend Karl Rosenbusch and I had dreams bigger than Texas. He would be a rock star, and I’d be a Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist. We’d wind up in New York or Paris. Neither of us would have believed that we’d both settle in small-town Texas, me in Hutto, about thirty minutes north of Austin, and Karl in El Campo, where he moved in 2011—not to strut across a stage wielding a Les Paul but to work as a chef and raise a family.
