KTSM News – Former El Paso teacher opens colorful doughnut shop

Posted on February 28, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A former El Paso teacher recently opened up a doughnut shop in El Paso to give back to children in the community.

Anna Lozano, a former Tornillo teacher and assistant principal, partnered up with Hurts Donut, a franchise based out of Springfield, Missouri.

The doughnut shop opened two days ago on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 1404 Lee Trevino, Suite 101 in East El Paso. The shop offers a wide and special variety of doughnuts and a colorful pop art atmosphere.

“No other doughnut store in the nation has this, so we’re the only one in El Paso,” Lozano said.

Lozano says their most popular doughnut is the “Jesus” doughnut, which resembles a churro. The doughnut includes white cake, white icing, cinnamon, sugar, and caramel. The shop also decided to do an El Paso twist and sell huge conchas.

Lozano says the shop is “open 25/8.” The shop is open every day at any hour, including holidays.

“So we say that we’re open 25 hours, eight days a week because we are open an extra hour of the day, an extra day a week because we go the extra mile for you,” Lozano, one of the owners of the shop, said.

Lozano says the franchise also gives back to charity.

“It’s all about giving back to the community. They do a lot of things for charity. Every bottle of water that they sell or that we sell here in the store, also will give back to that community, to our community here in El Paso. A portion of it will benefit kids in need with Convoy of Hope. That’s the organization that we are with,” Lozano said.

Lozano shares that she was in the education industry for 16 years before she decided to open up the doughnut shop.

“I started off as an eighth-grade science teacher in Tornillo and then that wasn’t what I wanted to do but I ended up loving it. Kids just bring me a lot of joy. Whenever they come in they’re super excited to see you. That’s why I pretty much stayed in education,” Lozano said.

“I decided to try and move my way up in education so that I can make a difference, a bigger difference other than my 24 kids that I had in my classroom and so I became an assistant principal in the Sparks community, and then I went to Hurts Donut and I had this whole idea on opening up a franchise and I thought what better way to serve my community and bring a smile to every kids face than just open up my own,” Lozano said.

Lozano says when she first opened the shop she felt a little nervous but once the store began flourishing, she noticed how blessed she was to have a community like El Paso.

“Yesterday we had a line that was nonstop, starting at about three when all the kiddos got out of school and it just never stopped until like 11 p.m. So yeah I really do think that I’m blessed to have such an amazing community here in El Paso, that really just shared how great their experience was and I think that’s what had all these people walking through our doors,” Lozano said.

Lozano currently owns the shop with her husband and another business partner.
