EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Sun Metro will honor the life of Ruben Ibarra, a fleet maintenance technician who died after the Sun Metro explosion last month.
The City of El Paso says it will honor Ibarra’s life with a special tribute on Monday, March 3. All Sun Metro buses will display his name throughout the day and at 1:04 p.m., all bus operators across the network will pause service for one moment and observe a moment of silence.
“Our Sun Metro family is heartbroken and mourning the loss of our team member, Ruben Ibarra. This special memorial tribute will honor and remember him while showing support to his family as we share in their grief during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sun Metro Director Anthony DeKeyzer.
Ibarra started working with Sun Metro in December 2024 as a fleet maintenance technician. He was one of five employees hospitalized following the explosion at the Sun Metro Transit Operations Center, the City said.
Three others were checked at the scene for injuries but were not transported.
Ibarra was one of the two people who were flown to Phoenix, Arizona for treatment of critical injuries. He later died on Thursday, Feb. 13.
The City of El Paso continues to investigate the incident.
