SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Air and Marine Operations (AMO) on Monday experienced severe winds that resulted in one of its aerostats breaking free from its tether on South Padre Island.
Joe Vega, Cameron County Park Director, says when the cable snapped, it hit some power lines and a transformer. This caused parts of Isla Blanca to be without power. Due to the damage from the heavy winds the aerostat was lost shortly after breaking free.
AMO released a statement saying they are working with the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas DPS, and other state and local partners to locate the system.
The public is urged to contact the Air and Marine Operations Center at 1-866-247-2878 or 911 to report any contact, sightings, direction of movement, or other information regarding this system that looks like a white blimp.
AMO said they will provide further details as they become available.
