Border Report – ‘Couldn’t listen to incessant lies’: Escobar walks out of address

Posted on March 5, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, walked out of President Donals Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, saying she couldn’t stand listening to his “lies.”

She issued the following statement:

“I just walked out of Trump’s Joint Address. I couldn’t listen to the incessant lies.

“Donald Trump’s actions have demonstrated nothing but contempt for our Constitution, our country and its people. He’s corrupting our government, selling it to billionaires, and making hard-working Americans pay for it.”

U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-New Mexico, also walked out of the president’s speech.

Stansbury said that the first days of the new Trump administration are “not normal.”

“And we refuse to normalize it,” she said in a statement sent to regional media.

Her statement read in part:

“Fifty years ago, Members of Congress held a walkout of the 1975 State of the Union in protest of the corruption of the Nixon Administration and the Watergate Scandal. Tonight, we walked out in protest of the unprecedented attack on our democratic institutions and in solidarity with the millions of Americans who will be impacted by this Administration and the policies of the GOP-led Congress.”

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, whose district includes East El Paso, offered a starkly different view.

“On November 5, 2024, Americans sent an overwhelming message to Washington—enough is enough. In my district, we know all too well the damage caused by the Biden administration’s policies, especially at the border,” Gonzales said.

“Within hours of taking office, President Trump took action. He declared drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, ended catch-and-release policies, and drove down illegal border crossings to new lows. President Trump delivered a clear message tonight — America will continue to move full-speed ahead toward a future that puts our safety and prosperity first.”
