EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the shooting death of a 35-year-old man back in 2022, El Paso District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday, March 11.
The DA’s Office said Alexander Diaz, 29, accepted a plea agreement on Thursday, March 6, resulting in him being sentenced to 50 years in state prison for murder. He also waived all of his appellate rights under the plea deal. Two charges of tampering with evidence were dismissed as part of the plea, the DA’s Office added.
Diaz pleaded guilty to murder for “intentionally and knowingly” causing the death of Christopher Correa, 35, in September 2022, the DA’s Office said.
The DA’s Office said that on Sept.18, 2022, surveillance camera footage showed Correa and his friend leaving an East El Paso bar through the back exit, where they encountered Diaz and got into a conversation.
The conversation seemed to escalate into an argument, and Diaz walked away. The footage showed Diaz return with a firearm, walk up to Correa, and shoot him multiple times, the DA’s Office said.
The Da’s Office said Diaz then walked back to the car, put the firearm in the trunk, and walked back to the crime scene to retrieve the shell casings off the ground before driving away. An eyewitness identified Diaz as the shooter, and he was arrested later that same day.
“I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the Correa Family for the loss of Christopher. I also want to thank the El Paso Police Department, including the patrol officers and investigators, who worked on this case as well as the witnesses who came forward to ensure that the defendant was caught and held accountable for committing this completely senseless act of violence,” said District Attorney James Montoya.
