SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Nine migrants were intercepted off the coast of Point Loma late Monday night in a suspected smuggling attempt, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The boat was stopped by the Coast Guard’s Maritime Security and Safety Team from Los Angeles about 7 miles southwest of the Point Loma peninsula, authorities said in a release. The Coast Guard Cutter Petrel also aided in the encounter.
All of the migrants on board the craft, a 20-foot powerboat, were taken into custody and transferred to U.S. Border Patrol.
Authorities did not disclose any additional details about the incident.
The encounter comes just over a week after the Coast Guard interdicted more than 20 migrants in an apparent smuggling attempt, also off the coast of Point Loma.
