Border Report – Many migrants arriving at border malnourished, health experts say

Posted on March 13, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Most migrants arriving in Tijuana — either from the south or after being deported from the U.S. — are malnourished and are suffering from dehydration and other intestinal illnesses.

Aaron Morales, coordinator with United Borders for Health, said they arrived at this conclusion after providing health care to 22,000 migrants at eight different shelters in Tijuana during all of 2024.

“They’re also in need of psychological and psychiatric care, especially the children, that’s what our survey discovered,” he said.

According to Morales, many migrants are also victims of domestic abuse.

“Many were fleeing abuse or violence and it has manifested in psychological disorders and anxiety, they are constantly feeling insecure or threatened.”

Morales said they also encountered many migrants who are obese or have eating disorders and hypertension.

“And most migrants also suffer from poor dental hygiene which has led to periodontal and gingivitis issues.”
