Posted on March 18, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament is finally here.

Games began on Tuesday as the First Four round tipped off. Unfortunately for UTEP and New Mexico State men’s basketball fans, neither program are in the NCAA tournament this year.

This is the 15th straight year UTEP has missed out on playing in the tournament. Meanwhile for NMSU, this is the third consecutive year the are not dancing.

Anyways, there are some individuals with local ties that are participating in this year’s NCAA tournament. Here’s some notable individuals to keep an eye out for.

KJ Lewis is a sophomore guard at Arizona. He’s a spark plug for the Wildcats. This season, he is averaging 10.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game off the bench.

Terry left UTEP for an assistant coaching job on Chris Beard’s staff at Texas ahead of the 2021-22 season.

In the midst of the 2022-23 season, Terry was promoted to interim head coach of Texas after Beard’s arrest on an assault charge.

Terry guided Texas to a win in the Big 12 Tournament Championship game and a NCAA tournament appearance that season when he took over for Beard.

Terry was then promoted to full-time head coach in after the ’22-23 season. Texas has made the NCAA tournament the last two seasons with him as head coach.

The Terry-led Texas Longhorns will play Xavier in the First Four round. Game at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio is on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. MT.

Winner of the game will play 6-seed Illinois in the first round of the tournament.
